Chapter
12: LAP-BAND over Bypass The LAP-BAND Rescuing
a Failed Weight-loss Procedure
Failure
to lose weight or regaining weight after gastric
bypass and other stomach stapling is a frequent problem.
Again Europe, Australia, and Mexico are pioneers
in using the LAP-BAND to rescue failed bariatric
procedures, namely the gastric bypass and other stomach
stapling. This application for the LAP-BAND is still
not approved in the United States for clinical use.
Why
Stomach Stapling Fails?
Though an easy answer would be just to blame the patient, nothing could be
further from the truth. We are faced with a number of factors. First of all,
when somebody has weight-loss surgery, they have it mainly because they have
tried other nonsurgical weight-loss methods with no success. Once you have
the surgery, the intention is to limit either the food quantity or the absorption
of it, thereby losing weight. Though this may seem fail proof, it is not. Something
that is highly difficult to calculate and counteract is the beautiful ability
of the body to adapt. Because of this adaptation, the body can change drastically
as it is met with challenges. |
