Chapter
10: Hunger, Pains in the Brains
Anyone who has gone as far as
having a consultation visit with a bariatric surgeon,
or has attended a
weight-loss surgery seminar, has heard the statement “weight
loss surgery is just a tool and you must do your
part.” This is true with the LAP-BAND as well.
While the band curbs physical hunger, it does not
address all of the reasons we eat. The band does,
however, give us time to think about what we are
going to put in our mouths before we do it, and it
also allows us the time to realize that we are full. What I mean by this is that
the band takes away that insatiable hunger that
tells us, “I
must immediately stuff something in my mouth or
I’ll die!” In my experience, it is
obvious that we need to think about what we are
going to eat and ask ourselves, “Do I really
want or need to eat this?” If there is no
thought to the amount of food we eat then we mindlessly
stuff ourselves at such a fast pace that we don’t
even realize that we “ate the whole thing” without
knowing it.
