Chapter
8: Fills—Getting the Band Adjusted
The LAP-BAND is an adjustable implant, a device with three basic components:
the rigid cylindrical band made of silicone elastomer that has a built-in expandable
balloon on its inner surface, the reservoir (port), and a tube that connects
the port to the balloon. The balloon is inflatable with a capacity of either
four or nine cubic centimeters.
After a variable period, usually six weeks following surgery, the first fill
or adjustment is performed. The fill begins with a saline solution injected through
the port, traveling through the hose to the balloon side of the band, causing
it to expand, much like you would inflate an inner tube; except that instead
of air it fills with a liquid. When the band is inflated, it squeezes the stomach
to decrease the size of the stoma or hole between the upper part of the stomach,
the pouch, and the lower part of the stomach. In turn, this restricts the amount
of solid food you can eat. |
